The Metric That Matters More Than Domain Authority
Your Citation Score is a single number from 0 to 100 that tells you exactly how visible your business is inside the AI tools that millions of people now use every day to find products, services and recommendations. It measures something that no traditional SEO metric has ever captured — how often AI tools actually cite and recommend your business when people ask questions related to what you sell.
Think about how people search in 2026. They do not type three keywords into Google and scroll through ten blue links. They open ChatGPT and ask "What is the best Italian restaurant near me?" They ask Perplexity "Which accountant in Birmingham handles small business tax returns?" They ask Google AI Overviews "Who should I hire for website design in the West Midlands?" The AI gives them a direct answer. It names specific businesses. It recommends specific companies.
Your Citation Score measures whether your business is one of the businesses that gets named.
Every week, billions of queries flow through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Each of those queries is an opportunity for your business to be mentioned, recommended, cited and ultimately chosen by a potential customer. If your Citation Score is low, those opportunities are going to your competitors instead of you. If your Citation Score is high, AI is actively sending customers your way without you spending a single penny on advertising.
Traditional SEO metrics like Domain Authority and Domain Rating were designed for a world of search engine results pages. That world is disappearing. The new world runs on AI recommendations, and the metric that matters in this new world is your Citation Score.
The AEO-REX Citation Score methodology is transparent, repeatable and grounded in real data. We do not use vanity metrics or proprietary algorithms that nobody can verify. Here is exactly how we calculate your score.
We run between 20 and 50 real queries across multiple AI platforms that a potential customer of your business would actually ask. These are not generic queries — they are specific to your industry, your location and your service area.
Every query is tested across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews. We check each platform independently because a business that appears in ChatGPT might be completely invisible in Perplexity and vice versa.
We measure how many times your business is mentioned, named or recommended across all queries and all platforms. A business that appears in 40 out of 50 queries has a fundamentally different AI visibility profile than one that appears in 2 out of 50.
It is not enough to be mentioned — the information needs to be correct. We check whether AI tools are citing accurate opening hours, correct services, right location, up-to-date pricing and truthful descriptions of your business. Inaccurate citations damage trust.
These four components are weighted and combined into a single score from 0 to 100. A score below 20 means AI tools are essentially ignoring your business. A score between 20 and 50 means you have some visibility but significant gaps. A score between 50 and 80 means you are performing well but there are clear opportunities for improvement. A score above 80 means you are dominating AI recommendations in your sector.
Most small businesses in the UK score below 15. They do not know this because nobody has told them to measure it. That is the problem AEO-REX was built to solve.
"Domain Authority tells you how Google used to see your website. Citation Score tells you how AI sees your business right now."
For the past fifteen years, the SEO industry has been obsessed with Domain Authority and Domain Rating. These metrics were created by Moz and Ahrefs respectively to approximate how Google's PageRank algorithm evaluates the authority of a website based on the number and quality of backlinks pointing to it. They were useful metrics for a world where Google's organic search results determined business success.
That world is ending.
AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini do not use PageRank. They do not crawl the web looking at backlink profiles. They use completely different signals to decide which businesses to mention and recommend. These signals include entity recognition — whether your business exists as a clearly defined entity across multiple trusted data sources. They include citation frequency — how often your business appears in contexts that the AI model has been trained on or can retrieve. They include information consistency — whether the details about your business are the same across every platform where you appear.
A business with a Domain Authority of 15 and a strong entity presence across Wikidata, Crunchbase, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Trustpilot and industry directories can outperform a business with a Domain Authority of 60 that has no entity presence at all. We see this every single day in our client work.
The businesses that will thrive in 2026 and beyond are not the ones with the most backlinks. They are the ones with the highest Citation Scores. They are the ones that AI tools trust, cite and recommend. Everything else is becoming noise.
This is not speculation. This is already happening. The shift from search to AI recommendations is the single biggest change in how customers find businesses since the invention of Google itself. And the businesses that adapt first will win.
